The MAC layer of IEEE 802.11 has mechanisms to avoid collisions. However, collisions occur due to hidden node problem. It has retransmission strategy which is employed when collisions occur. Since, the hidden node problem causes time wastage for retransmission. Many approaches came into existence for collision prevention and recovery besides solving hidden node problems. However, a common thread in all of them is that they cause control overhead. The researchers resolved this problem using N-ACK scheme.
