TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) is a protocol used along with the Internet Protocol (IP) to send data in the form of packets between computers over the Internet. While IP takes care of handling the actual delivery of the data, TCP takes care of keeping track of the packets that a message is divided into for efficient routing through the internet. TCP considers all packet timeouts in wired networks as due to network congestion and not to bit errors. It therefore considers all packet losses as due to congestion and consequently reduces the burst of packet, diminishing at the same time the network throughput.
