Wireless sensor network is a collection of nodes organized into a cooperative network. The nodes communicate wirelessly and often self-organize after being deployed in an ad hoc fashion. The position of sensor nodes need not be engineered or predetermined. This allows random deployment in inaccessible terrains or disaster relief operations. This also means that sensor network protocols and algorithms must possess self-organizing capabilities. The unique feature of sensor networks is the cooperative effort of sensor nodes. Gathering sensed data in an energy efficient manner is critical to operate the network for a long period of time.
