Biometric recognition or, simply, biometrics refers to the automatic recognition of individuals based on their physiological and/or behavioral characteristics. By using biometrics, it is possible to confirm or establish an individual's identity based on \"Who the user is,\" rather than by \"What the users' possesses\" (e.g., an ID card). Among all the biometric techniques, fingerprint-based identification is the oldest method, which has been successfully used in numerous applications. Everyone is known to have unique, immutable fingerprints. The uniqueness of a fingerprint can be determined by the pattern of ridges and furrows as well as the minutiae points.
