An Efficient Motion Estimation Algorithm Using Trace Match for Fast Video Compression

Motion estimation is the vital step in video compression to remove the temporal redundancy between adjacent frames and several algorithms have been proposed for its acceleration. In this paper, the authors present an innovative two pass motion estimation technique to minimize the computational load of conventional full search block matching motion estimation algorithm. The proposed motion estimator first finds the matching block using the trace calculation and only on match, it calculates the Sum of Absolute Difference (SAD) for the entire block in order to ensure best motion prediction.
