Unbalanced energy consumption is an inherent problem in clustering Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), and this uneven energy dissipation can significantly reduce network lifetime. In this paper, the authors propose an Energy-Aware Unequal Clustering routing protocol (EAUC) for WSNs. During the cluster formation stage, EAUC uses a weight model for cluster head election, and introduces an unequal clustering to partition the nodes into clusters of unequal size. In the phase of data transmission, EAUC adopts a combination of single-hop mode for intra-cluster communication and multi-hop mode for inter-cluster communication, furthermore, it introduces a weight function to optimize the selection of cluster head relay.
