In this paper, the authors study the problem of constructing an energy-efficient data aggregation tree for wireless sensor networks. Their aim is to reduce the cost of transmitting data by aggregating data at appropriate intermediate nodes. They proposed a polynomial time algorithm Energy-Efficient Data Aggregation Tree (EEDAT), to reduce the transmission cost by decreasing the hop distance a packet will travel and by merging data into suitable intermediate nodes. For sending data from a node at level l, EEDAT algorithm intelligently selects a node at level l-1 by using the aggregation ratio associated with every sensor node.
