In this paper the authors aim to enhance the security of Wi-Fi, one of the most prevalent media for internet access. With a view of providing city-wide wireless connectivity, a new algorithm based on the HMAC based One-Time Password (HOTP) algorithm is proposed. In places of public access, using the user's static passwords is compromising with their own security. One-time passwords provide random passwords that are harmless even if captured by sniffers. The new algorithm accommodates these requirements, and more, to secure user credentials in public networks.
