Analysis of Application-Specific Broadcast Reliability for Vehicle Safety Communications

With the rapid developments in wireless technology, Vehicle Safety Communications (VSC) have the potential to enable a wide array of novel safety applications such as cooperative collision warning and avoidance, road condition warning, and traffic merge assistance. However, these safety applications rely primarily on broadcast communications among vehicles, which may lead to significant packet loss, particularly in high-density traffic scenarios. Frequent packet exchange among neighboring vehicles is essential to the success of such safety applications, but contiguous loss of broadcasts among vehicles may lead to situations where a vehicle has not heard from a neighbor for extensive periods of time.
