Off-Chip replacement (capacity and conflict) and coherent read misses in multi-chip CMP cause execution to stall for hundreds of cycles. In this paper, the authors investigate off-chip replacement and coherent read misses of Princeton Application Repository for SharEd-memory Computers (PARSEC) workloads using trace-driven simulation. Using information-theoretic analysis they found that off-chip replacement and coherent read misses recur system-wide in the same order forming repetitive sequences of two or more misses called replacement/coherent streams. Most of the replacement and coherent streams are short and significantly contribute in the cumulative percentage of streams misses.
