In this paper, the authors provide an introduction to one of the important shifts occurring in the field of remuneration, namely, the move from standard ways of remunerating employees based on criteria which have little to do with their contribution to the organization's performance, to a system which specifically seeks to reward employees for their contribution as individuals or as part of a group, or to reward employees on account of the organization's overall positive performance. In doing so, the paper confines itself to some of the basic principles and trends which can be extracted from various experiences.
