Circuit Modeling for Practical Many-Core Architecture Design Exploration
Research on modeling multi-core architectures has focused on cycle-accurate models (e.g. Verilog RTL), event-based models (e.g. System-C), feedback control models and architectural simulators but they can quickly over-whelm the designer while obscuring qualitative insight. Current tools for computer architecture design lack standard sup-port for multi- and many-core development. The authors propose using circuit models to describe the multiple processor architecture to motivate a circuit based design approach applied to a computer architecture problem. A test chip with DVFS capable processors is used to explore their ideas through software implementation.
