A column oriented DBMS is a database management system that stores its content by column rather than the row. This has advantages for data warehouses and library catalogues where aggregates are computed over large number of similar data items. Column stores are well suited for OLAP like workloads i.e., warehouses which typically involve a smaller number of highly complex queries over all data mostly terabytes. Column data is of uniform type, there are some opportunities for storage size optimizations available in column oriented data that are not available in row oriented data. This data base differs from the traditional databases with regards to performance, storage requirements and ease of modification of the schema.
