As the amount of XML data increases, it is becoming vital to be able to store and query this information. Although latest commercial RDBMS implementations already have the facilities for XML data managements, the inherent verbosity hinders the use of XML in data exchange. In this paper, the authors propose XRZip, a compact XML storage scheme which can be used in XML database systems and supports querying on compressed XML data. In XRZip, region coding and RDBMS are employed as the storage engine and text data are separated from the structure and compressed by the back-end compressors.
