Cognitive radio is a radio for wireless communications in which either a network or a wireless node changes its transmission or reception parameters based on the interaction with the environment to communicate efficiently without interfering with licensed users. This changing of parameters is based on the active monitoring of external and internal radio environment such as radio frequency spectrum, user behavior trends and network state. Simply, the idea behind the cognitive radio paradigm is the utilization of the idle frequency bands allocated to primary users or licensed users by the secondary users or unlicensed users without any interference to primary users' communications.
