In this paper, the authors propose a coplanar capacitive coupled suspended microstrip antenna with reduced air gap (compact) for wireless applications is presented. Suspended microstrip antennas offer wide bandwidth due to the reduced effective dielectric constant and surface waves. However, air gap in the suspended configuration is the prime constraint in compact applications. Therefore, in this paper, it is demonstrated that the air gap can be significantly reduced by utilizing the previously reported approaches and modifying them would result in significant reduction compared to the results reported earlier for the similar antenna geometries.
