Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) have been the subject of extensive research during the last few years and have been successfully applied to general purpose applications out of the graphical domain. The GPUs are designed to perform hundreds of billions of floating point operations per second on their large bandwidth on-board memory. Until recently, the only available environments to program the GPU were the OpenGL and Microsoft Direct3D Graphics APIs. The major drawbacks of using either of these for general purpose computing are related to the graphics nature of both environments.
