New control methodologies based only on experimental data have recently appeared in literature. These methodologies skip the modeling step and find the controller directly from one or more experiments on the plant. In this paper, a new data-driven methodology for the Internal Model Control controller tuning based on the Virtual Reference Feedback Tuning method is presented. Taking advantage of the characteristics of the Internal Model Control structure, a robustness test is presented and analyzed using only the available data taken in an open-loop experiment. Examples are provided to show the application of this technique using a non-linear plant.
