Now-a-days, data communication is growing rapidly. Among them multimedia and Internet communications by wireless systems are the most popular. So the architecture of the wireless networks is varying based on that. In this paper, the authors review UMTS based on connection to Internet. They review UMTS architecture and functionality of its layer 2 with focus on RLC, then its error recovery mechanisms and transport channels. They consider data flow for non-transparent RLC and transparent MAC. Finally, they simulate the effects of RLC protocol and erroneous MAC PDUs and delays on the throughput and throughput efficiency based on MAC PDU retransmissions and data blocks and compute average delay versus retransmission times.
