Design of a Miniaturized Rectangular Microstrip Patch using Metamaterials for WLAN Applications

In this paper, the authors present an antenna design suitable for the applications of Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) along with a metamaterial structure. A rectangular microstrip patch antenna loaded with Split Ring Resonator (SRR) is presented in this paper. Initially a rectangular microstrip patch antenna is designed that resonates at 8.5Ghz which is then miniaturized to the operating frequency of 5.2Ghz (WLAN) by inserting slots in the rectangular structure. To obtain better impedance matching in the WLAN band, metamaterial SRR is introduced in the slot. A bandwidth of 350Mhz is obtained with center frequency of 5.2Ghz.
