The Web contains large volumes of documents and resources that are linked together. In the early days of the Web, manually locating relevant information was reasonably easy due to the limited amount of information that was available. Typically, users found relevant information with the aid of manually maintained web rings, links pages, and directories, such as Yahoo! and later DMOZ, which were organized by topic. However, as the size of the Web grew, these approaches were augmented or replaced by automated systems using web crawlers and search engines.
