Design of a Prototype Serial-USB Converter

The serial port is a communication interface between computers and devices for digital data transmission; "Serial" because the port "Serializes" data, i.e. by a byte of data transmitting the 8 bits of a byte one at a time. This paper presents the design of a prototype serial-USB (Universal Serial Bus) converter, useful for transferring data from devices that do not have RS-232 serial ports. The prototype was designed using a tablet prototyping (protoboard), MAX232 chip and the PIC18F4550 microcontroller.
