In this paper, the authors have highlighted the capability of surface remote sensing as a crucial method in avoiding the ambiguity of statistically-based satellite aerosol/cloud interaction studies. Their overall goal is to describe the instrumentation and algorithms needed to provide simultaneous aerosol and cloud measurements at time resolutions suitable to isolate aerosol/cloud interactions that modify the cloud droplets. A demonstration of the algorithm together with the retrieval uncertainty was given for a case where surface measurements alone did not result in any observable ACI.
