Eliciting knowledge is the key to build large and powerful Knowledge-Based Systems (KBSs) that are capable of solving problems or giving advice. In this view, knowledge elicitation is the work a knowledge engineer carried out when building a particular KBSs. As being understood increasingly, not only is it difficult and time-consuming to build KBSs, the introduction of a knowledge engineer between the domain expert and the knowledge base could lead to errors and misunderstandings. The authors view knowledge based systems development as a collaborative activity. The picture is further complicated by the difficulties involved in eliciting knowledge.
