Enterprise resource planning applications require rapid response to queries, dynamic scaling and massive parallel processing something that traditional disk based databases are unable to satisfy. The advent of battery backed up non-volatile main memory and multicore parallel processing architectures together with increasing memory sizes and falling hardware costs has made it possible to realize a database that resides completely in the main memory. But the size of main memory being comparatively smaller than a hard disk, it's essential to compress the in memory data so as to achieve the desired space saving while at the same time leverage the rapid sequential access provided by main memory.
