Over the last several years, many retailers fell prey to the economic downturn, resulting in mass layoffs, widespread job insecurity and an increase in employee theft and shoplifting, otherwise known as shrinkage. A drop in retail employee engagement accompanied the drop in sales. This paper uses data from the latest work trends survey to explore the current state of employee engagement within the retail sector. The paper discusses links between employee engagement and important organizational outcomes, and suggests improving retail employee engagement.
