The paper presents and summarizes the recent advances attained when deploying the GMPLS Unified Control Plane (UCP) for handling Multi-Layer Networks (MLN) within the CTTC ADRENALINE test-bed. Specifically, the goal was to design, implement and validate/evaluate the control functions and protocol improvements (e.g., Forwarding adjacency management) performed by the UCP to allow the automatic provisioning and restoration of (MPLS-TP) packet connections over a Wavelength Switched Optical Network (WSON) infrastructure. Such operations entail the collaboration among the two involved layers (i.e., packet and optical) to fully exploit the benefits of MLN traffic engineering decisions (i.e., grooming) in terms of the network resource utilization.
