Fine Tuning the Performance of Polling Based TDMA MACProtocols With Sleep and Wakeup Cycles

In sensor networks, MAC protocols based on Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) with sleep and wake periods have attracted interest because of their collision free operation and low power consumption. In, Yang and Sikdar develop an analytic model to evaluate the performance of MAC protocols for sensor networks. Their model characterizes queuing delays of the protocols as well as the energy consumed by the MAC layer. This paper is based primarily on their work. However, whereas Yang and Sikdar analyze a model that is uses roll call polling, the authors propose hub polling to poll the nodes in a cluster. Hub polling has been shown to be more time efficient than roll call polling and their results confirm improved performance using hub polling.
