The latest HDMI1.4a describes three categories of 3D video data structures, including frame packing, side-by-side and top-and-bottom. Top-and-bottom data structure keeps the same data bandwidth with normal 2D video, but at the cost of half resolution on the vertical axis, so it is commonly used in broadcasting or on-line video, in which efficiency is more important than definition. In consideration of that there is still no ASIC solution to full-support HDMI1.4a, the authors propose a low-cost solution based on FPGA to support top-and-bottom video data structure display on a diamond DMD based projector in this paper, they have implemented this method in their test platform and got good 3D display result.
