In Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) wireless communication systems, their error rate performance is mostly determined by detection algorithms. Recently, a novel low-complexity MIMO detection algorithm based on symbol distribution approximation has been proposed. In this paper, provided that the symbol constellation is restricted to M-ary Phase Shift Keying (PSK) or Amplitude-modulated PSK (APSK), the authors propose an approach that can further reduce detection complexity without noticeable performance degradation. Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) wireless communication systems are promising in that it increases the transmission rate in proportion to the number of transmit antennas by sending multiple information sub-streams from different transmitting antennas.
