Heuristics for Routing and Spectrum Allocation in Elastic Optical Path Networks

In this paper, the authors present an efficient method for spectrum allocation that uses Integer Linear Programming (ILP) and heuristics. In elastic networks, the WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) rigid frequency grid is replaced by a more flexible structure, where the spectrum is organized in frequency slots and each traffic flow is assigned to an appropriate set of contiguous slots. This new concept, which is based on Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM), is known as spectrum-SLICEd elastic optical path network (SLICE). In this paper, a mathematical formulation and two heuristics are proposed to conveniently route the traffic demand in SLICE networks. Numerical simulations were performed with the mathematical formulation for small networks, whereas the heuristics were used in large networks, where the processing of mathematical formulation becomes intense.
