Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) on commodity video cards have evolved into powerful computational devices tailored towards the needs of the 3-D gaming industry for high-performance, real-time graphics engines. In the past, software development on GPUs has been geared exclusively towards graphics through the use of languages such as OpenGL shading language and Direct3D high-level shader language. Nvidia Corporation released a new generation of GPUs designed for general purpose use. These G80 series GPUs provide up to 128 stream processors and support 12,288 active threads.
