Hypothetical Case Studies for Discussion With the Provincial Panel

A 62 year-old man is to have a revision of his total hip replacement. This procedure is associated with a potentially large amount of blood loss and often requires a blood transfusion. Because this patient is on blood pressure medication, he is turned down by CBS/HQ for pre-donating his own blood. The following two scenarios describe what could happen as the patient enters two different hospitals. This article discusses about the hypothetical situation; which have occurred at one time or another in Canadian hospitals.
