Automatic identification or verification of individuals based on their anatomical or behavioral characteristics is known as biometrics. Biometric systems based on a single source of biometric information are unimodal biometrics systems. Most of the unimodal biometric systems fail to be sufficient for recognition due to limitations such as noisy sensor data, non-universality, large intra-user variations, lack of individuality of the chosen biometric trait, susceptibility to spoof attacks and poor error rates. Some of these problems can be alleviated by using multimodal biometrics systems that fuse evidence from multiple biometric sources of the same identity.
