Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) comprise of nodes, which are particularly used for sensing and data collection purposes, and they use the wireless medium for data exchange. These sensor nodes are typically battery-powered and thus face the problem of limited lifetime, due to the finite number of charging and discharging cycles of batteries. Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols in WSNs have to be properly designed so as to ensure the efficient utilization of the wireless medium by the nodes in the network.
