Underwater acoustic channel poses a greater challenge due to its low data rate constraint (between 20 to 50 Kb/s) which makes difficult for real time video compression algorithm using low complexity devices such as handheld devices and Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV) mainly used for video surveillance. In order to transmit a better quality video, in real time embedded system, compression schemes with high compression ratio and less time complexity are required. The coding schemes have high compression ratios but need to be optimized for real time embedded applications. This paper presents a H.264/AVC based real-time encoder implementation on a multicore embedded system for underwater acoustic channel.
