The energy of nodes in the Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) is limited and it is hard to renew energy. Routing finding and signal transmission will consume much energy. A suitable routing algorithm should save much energy. According to the shortcomings of the Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy (LEACH) algorithm, an improved hierarchical routing algorithm for heterogeneous WSNs is proposed. In the improved algorithm, the circular surveillance area is divided into a series of small regions on the basis of certain rules, each small region selects a cluster head based on the energy and the normal nodes in the cluster send information to the cluster head.
