In this paper, the authors present an overview of the novel technologies that they are experiencing today in the automation industries. They present the opportunities and challenges of having tightly coupled collaborative networks of embedded systems for controlling complex physical processes. Their objective is to motivate the targeted design automation community to tackle some of the grand challenges in the area of such a distributed, intelligent, and collaborative embedded computing platform.
