It is clear that Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) is having a substantial impact on the way in which software systems are developed. This paper presents some of the characteristics of future service-oriented systems. Also, it focuses on a set of architecture and design drivers for these future service-oriented systems that can help meet new expectations without sacrificing the loosely coupled, stateless, standards-based characteristics that have driven SOA adoption in many contexts. The paper concludes with thoughts on the key role of the architect in the service oriented systems-development process.
