Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOGs) are a new type of large-scale distributed application. For example, the social game FarmVille and similar games attract monthly over one hundred million users. Since the early 2000s, MMOGs are traditional HPC users; for example, World of Warcraft (WoW) deploys globally hundreds of thousands of cores in 9 datacenters. Invented by industry, MMOGs have recently attracted the interest of distributed computing researchers as well. With the advent of cloud computing, there is a trend of MMOG operators using cloud resources as their infrastructure, to serve their customers due to the elastic, flexible, and pay-as-you-go features of clouds.
