Medium Access Control for 60 GHz Wireless Networks: A Comparative Review

The 60GHz wireless networks enable multi-GBps local communications. With opportunities, however, there are many challenges because the physical wave characteristics of the 60GHz band are quite different from those of the currently used 2.4GHz and 5GHz ISM bands. Moreover, there are many hot issues associated with the MAC (Medium Access Control) layer as the directional MAC protocols proposed for 2.4GHz and 5GHz cannot be directly implemented on the 60GHz frequency because of different characteristics of the millimeter waves.
