Emerging energy storage technologies in the electricity grid can be potentially used for various services, e.g., to enhance sustainability, reliability, efficiency and asset utilization. The economic value and national impact of these services has been emphasized in various recent studies. Large-scale storage is a promising emerging technology to realize a reliable smart-grid since it can enhance sustainability, reliability and asset utilization. At fast time-scales, storage can be used to mitigate fluctuations and time-variations on renewable generation and demand. On slower time scales, it can be used for load shifting and reducing the generation costs.
