Overview of IPv6 Mobility Management Protocols and Their Handover Performances

IPv6 mobility management is one of the most challenging research topics for an efficient support of global roaming of Mobile Nodes (MNs) in next-generation wireless networks. The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) has developed Mobile IPv6 (MIPv6) and its proposed enhancements, i.e., Fast handovers for Mobile IPv6 (FMIPv6) and Hierarchical Mobile IPv6 (HMIPv6) as host-based mobility management protocols. Recently IETF working group has standardized network-based mobility management protocols, such as, Proxy Mobile IPv6 (PMIPv6) and Fast Proxy Mobile IPv6 (FPMIPv6).
