In this paper, the cognitive transmission and the spectrum sensing overhead are investigated to improve the outage performance of cognitive users. The outage performance of different cognitive transmission schemes is simulated and analyzed. The authors demonstrate that the outage performance of the cognitive relay transmission is superior to that of the non-relay transmission. Besides, numerical results show that there exists an optimal value of spectrum sensing overhead to minimize the outage probability. Finally, they can draw the conclusion that decreased detection probability and data rate can lead to an improved outage performance.
