The availability of efficient, fast and accurate burst error models are useful for evaluating and improving higher communication protocols in many of the current generation networks using the basic Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) and Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) blocks. The authors estimate in this paper discrete HMM error models for these two important transmissions in frequency selective fading. Statistics like average log likelihood, average length of error burst, autocorrelation function, distribution probability of error free intervals and average error probabilities have been applied to judge the accuracy of the models and estimate their optimum order and parameters.
