In the strive for lessening of the environmental impact of the information and communication industry, energy consumption of communication networks has recently received increased attention in this regard, the deployment of small, low power base stations called femtocells, alongside conventional sites is often believed to greatly lower the energy consumption of mobile access networks. In this paper, the authors focus on the impact of femtocell deployment on WCDMA network energy consumption. They introduce the model of area power consumption as a system performance metric based on WCDMA downlink load equations.
