Privacy-sensitive information can be extracted from the load data which is available in high resolution in smart metering. A number of approaches to Privacy-Enhancing Technologies (PET) have been suggested to provide privacy in smart metering while maintaining (a certain level of) functionality. To date, most of these approaches have not been subjected to real-world use beyond test pilots in model regions. The authors review types of approaches for privacy-aware smart metering and discuss issues that may prove challenging for widespread adoption.
