Flash memory, in the form of Solid State Drive (SSD), is being increasingly employed in mobile, personal and even enterprise-level storage systems. Flash memory SSDs have been widely used in high-end laptops to improve performance, save energy and increase mobility, while enterprise-level storage systems also employ SSD as a cache device to meet mission-critical requirements. Although SSD has many attractive features such as energy-efficiency, superior random read I/O performance, shock-resilience and small form factor, it suffers from two physical limitations that restrict the direct deployment of SSD in the enterprise-level systems.
