The Analog to Digital Converters (ADCs) have been in existence for more than 30 years and an integral part of software defined radio, sensor applications and other potential applications. This paper discusses about the implementation of ADC using the Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) and encodes the variable width (duty cycle) of the sampled pulses into digital codes. This paper of converting the duty cycle of a pulse into digital code has been deployed in the design of Phase Locked Loops (PLLs) where varying pulse width from a phase detector is used to control a Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO) to generate suitable codes.
