In this paper, the authors investigate the real-time aspects of digital control system implementation. The control system design is based on the model predictive control, which is one of the most popular advanced control design techniques. Two alternatives of predictive control implementation using the Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) are proposed and compared. In the first case, the control law design and execution is performed in PC using the Matlab/Simulink environment and the PLC is used only to accomplish the data acquisition and control input implementation. The communication between PC and PLC is ensured by the OPC communication protocol. In the second case, the control law is directly implemented in PLC using the available instructions.
